Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has reportedly promised "some good news" on Telangana and asked his party's ministers from that region in Andhra Pradesh to withdraw their resignations.
"Pranab Mukherjee asked us to withdraw our resignations and assured us that there will be good news on Telangana issue in the near future," State Information and Tourism Minister Geeta Reddy said after meeting with Mukherjee on Sunday.
Reddy had led a delegation of 13 ministers who have quit in protest against the Centre putting Telangana statehood on the backburner.
The ministers were not in an immediate mood to relent. "We will discuss it (request to withdraw resignations) among ourselves. Our aim is not being in posts of power, but meeting the expectations of the people of Telangana.
Their aspiration is to have a separate state. This is the right time to have Telangana," Reddy said.
"We have requested Pranab Mukherjee to clear the doubts over the issue of separate statehood, created after Home Minister P Chidambaram's statement on December 23. It gave an impression that Telangana was taking a backseat," said Water Resources Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah.
