Kamal Hasaan Big Project - 150 Cr

Kamal Haasan has always been known for his involvement in the script of the films that he works. It is also known that ‘Marudanayagam’ is his all time personal favorite project and this again happens to be his own script. Apparently, this was meant to be produced by the famous Aascar Films banner.

Now, it is heard that his project might have got into some rough weather. Sources say that the Aascar folks have got their own skepticism as Kamal worked on ‘Manmadha Baanam’ script and this shows his grip over the script writing and scene composition skills.

Though some of them are backing Kamal saying that the genres are different, the cine pundits say that extreme precision is required while preparing script for a film which is estimated at a whopping budget of Rs 150 crores. " నీ favourite hero ఎవరు?", someone asked when our group of friends sat together for a chat, in Special Coaching Center-Barkatpura, Hyderabad), before a class for an EAMCET '95 crash course started. "Kamal Hasan", answered my friend Vikram. "ఆఁ, సర్లే, కమల్‌హాసన్ నచ్చనిది ఎవరికి? ఇంకో పేరు చెప్పు!" quipped the questioner. This is what I have seen on several occasions later too, among various groups of friends in Hyderabad, Bapatla, or even New Jersey or Louisiana. I lost touch with Vikram after the course, but he too probably relived this scene even after 1995. "Really... how can one actor be a favorite for so many people, across generations?", I wondered back then, and ever since! "అబ్బ, భరతనాట్యం, కథాకళి, కథక్ ఇవేమీ మనకు తెలియకపోయినా అందరికీ తేడా అర్థమయ్యే లాగా ఎంత బాగా చేస్తున్నాడు !", said my grandmother once, about Kamal Hasan in Saagara Sangamam. "మరుగుజ్జు లాగ భలే ఉన్నాడు కమల్... అసలెట్లా చేసాడో!", wondered a friend as he recommended Vichitra Sodarulu movie to me. "కమల్‌హాసన్ ఒక్కడి కోసమైనా చూడొచ్చు సినిమా", assured another friend about Indrudu-Chandrudu. "ఆడపాత్రలు అంతకు ముందు కూడా వేసారు జనాలు... కానీ, కమల్‌హాసన్‌ని చూస్తే ఎబ్బెట్టుగా అనిపించదు.", pondered someone. "పది పాత్రలూ కమల్‌హాసన్ ఒక్కడే వెయ్యాలా అంటే అక్కర్లేదు. కానీ, తప్పేముంది, అంతటి variation చూపించగలిగినప్పుడు?", someone else defended Dasavatharam. "కమల్‌హాసన్ సినిమాలు అంటే అందరూ classy movies గురించి చెబుతారు కానీ, కమల్‌హాసన్ comedies భలే ఉంటాయి అసలు... తెనాలి, బ్రహ్మచారి, ...అన్నిటి కన్నా too much అంటే సతీ లీలావతి...", another went on listing, while someone else added, "అవి మాత్రమేనా...? మైఖేల్ మదన కామ రాజు? ఒక రాధ-ఇద్దరు కృష్ణులు? పుష్పక విమానం?..." and someone else joined in, "ఎక్కువ మంది చూడలేదేమో కానీ... confusing comedies 'ఎక్కితే' నవ్వండి.. లవ్వండి!, పంచతంత్రం, ముంబయ్ Xప్రెస్ కూడా బాగా నచ్చుతాయి అట్లాంటి వాళ్ళకి.", and another of our lengthy discussions on India's one of the greatest actors has already ensued. ...When such discussions happen, some people might have heard comments like "...make-up gimmicks తప్పించి నాకు performance ఎక్కువ కనిపించదు కమల్‌హాసన్‌లో... Over-action అనిపిస్తుంది...". Kamal in Nayakudu I wonder if such people watched the classics Idi Katha Kaadu, Aakali Raajyam, Amavasya Chandrudu, Maro Charitra, Vasantha Kokila, Saagara Sangamam, Naayakudu, Kshatriya Puthrudu, or the more recent Mahanadi, Drohi, Pothuraju, Raghavan, and can I ever stop listing more films where he shows his acting prowess?! We all know his talent that speaks countless volumes, even through his muted expressions such as those in Saagara Sangamam or the full-silent movie Pushpaka Vimaanam. "Can his skills be in dance, writing, direction, and acting be matched by any one person?", I wonder. And then, it's no wonder S.P. Balasubrahmanyam comes to my mind, though his talents are a bit on different side, reminding why Kamal and S.P.B. could gel so well, that S.P.B. entered into film production with Kamal Hasan's Subha Sankalpam, and that we cannot sometimes think of Kamal Hasan without S.P.B.'s voice to go with it - a "combo pack" that completes 20 years since their first acting-dubbing combination in Erra Gulabeelu (1979). Kamal Hasan started as a child artiste, became a dancer/choreographer, turned a hero, penned stories and screenplays, and produced and directed films. The multi-versed artiste had also rendered more than a handful of songs, some of them even in movies that he didn't act (Dhanush's Dhoolpeta is the only example for Telugu audience), and two of them for female characters he portrayed on screen, and three songs in Yuvan Shankar Raja's Tamil Indipop album! Some of these include: వెయ్ వెయ్ తకధిమి... (ఒక రాధ-ఇద్దరు కృష్ణులు), రుక్కు రుక్కు రుక్కు... (భామనే సత్యభామనే..!), శరవణభవ కొలువగు వెలుగా... (నవ్వండి.. లవ్వండి!), లక్కు మీద లక్కు వచ్చి... (నవ్వండి.. లవ్వండి!), విరహమే లేక కవితలే రావు... (పంచతంత్రం), నేనే శివం... (సత్యమే శివం), ఇదేమి వింత గోల... (ముంబయ్ Xప్రెస్స్), నిప్పుల పెదవులు జ్వలియిస్తే... (ధూల్‌పేట), and ముకుందా ముకుందా... (దశావతారం). (He also penned lyrics but not in Telugu.) It's a surprise to note that Kamal acted in less than 200 movies in his 50-year acting career (ignoring nearly 10 years that he didn't act between his transition from child artiste to dance direction career to lead actor) and the only a quarter of them have been released in Telugu! Yet, he received Nandi Award for Best Actor thrice and Filmfare Award for Best Actor thrice in 14 straight Telugu films (not counting simultaneous makes) he acted. Starting with Best Child Artiste Award for his very first film, Kamal won the Best Actor Award thrice, thus having won four national awards in all!  He won a total of 18 Filmfare Awards in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi, one of them being a Best Story Award (for Viraasat in Hindi). Kamal Hasan-penned and directed Virumaandi (Pothuraju in Telugu) won the International Award for Best Asian Film at South Korea's Puchon International Fantastic Film  Festival. His films went to the Oscars seven times! It's sad to note that the Government of India thinks he's worth just the "level one" Padma award, the PadmaSree, which was awarded in 1990! Kamal was also the first recipient of the Abraham Kovoor National Award for "Humanist Activities and Secular Life" in 2004. It's not incorrect to say that many awards gained respect after they were conferred to Kamal Hasan! In all, Kamal Hasan is said to have won over 170 awards, interestingly a number very near to the total number of films he acted ever! FICCI gave him the Living Legend Award this year, but what award can be a measure of all the talent that's spelt by the name K-A-M-A-L-H-A-S-A-N!?

Kamal Hasan Completes 50 Years as actor

South India’s legendary film actor Kamal Haasan today completed 50 years as actor. His first film was Kalathur Kannamma in Tamil that was released on August 12, 1959. At the age of 6, he played a crucial role in this film as child artiste which also fetched him his first National Award. Later he went to win another three National Awards for best actor in films like Moondram Pirai (Vasantha Kokila), Nayakan (Nayakudu) and Indian (Bharateeydu). Kamal is the only actor in South India who won Filmfare awards for record 18 times. He also won Best Actor award (Nandi) from our Telugu films three times - Sagara Sangamam, Swathi Muthyam and Indrudu Chandrudu.

 

Kamal Haasan has acted in 162 films so far in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada languages. In Telugu alone, he did about 15 films and most of his Tamil movies dubbed into our language and some of them are simultaneously shot too.

 

Kamal currently is acting in Eenadu - a bilingual with Venky playing with Kamal in Telugu version, Mohan Lal sharing screen space with Kamal for Tamil version. The film is slated for release shortly.

Kamal Haasan’s 'Eenadu' is under progress

Kamal Haasan and Venkatesh starrer bilingual Eenadu has commenced its regular shoot today (Tuesday, April 7, 2009) at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The film is shot both in Telugu and Tamil. In Telugu version Kamal and Venky are playing lead roles while in Tamil Malayalam superstar Mohan Lal replaces Venky’s character. 

The film is remake of Hindi super hit, A Wednesday. Newcomer Chakri (who played the role of photographer in Sagara Sangamam) is directing it using latest camera technology - RED digital cameras. The film is jointly produced by Kamal Hasan’s Raj Kamal banner and UTV Studios. Suresh Productions might take up distribution for Telugu version or present the movie.

Venky, Kamal together

The combination of Kamal Haasan and Venkatesh has finally been materialized. Although they were to act together in Kamal’s ambitious film Marmayogi, the project was dropped off due to budget constraints. Now they are coming together for a quickie - remake of Hindi hit A Wednesday. According to sources, Venkatesh has agreed to be part of this film that starts it shooting from March 2nd week at a specially erected set in Hyderabad. Kamal is producing it on his Raj Kamal Movies banner while Chakri, the guy who did the role of kid photographer in Kamal’s Sagara Sangamam, is directing it.

Earlier this project landed in legal trouble as Telugu producer Kiran Kumar (Homam and Siddham) went to court over its remake rights as he reportedly paid advance to the UTV that produced A Wednesday in Hindi. Buzz is that now everything is settled and Kamal is producing it along with UTV.

Despite UTV’s official statement that the remake rights of A Wednesday haven’t been sold, grapevine has it that Kamal Haasan has purchased the rights and is likely to remake it in Tamil. It is also said that he has roped in Mohanlal for the role of the Police Commissioner played by Anupam Kher while Kamal himself will play the common man’s role that Naseeruddin Shah essayed in the Hindi version. It is said that Santhanabharathy or KS Ravikumar might direct this flick if Kamal decides against directing it himself.

Rajni-Kamal to participate in protest

 
The Nadigar Sangam will observe a fast tomorrow to protest against the killing of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka. The participation of the twin stalwarts of Kollywood – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan – was doubtful until today. But now both have confirmed their participation in the Nadigar Sangam’s protests to be held on November 1st. But they have requested Nadigar Sangam not to force them to talk at the protest. In fact, they have also requested Nadigar Sangam to preclude anyone from airing their thoughts as one would be overwhelmed with emotions at the juncture and might end up saying something untoward at the venue. Coincidentally, the Tamil Nadu Government too has requested the Nadigar Sangam to hold a silent protest.
 
Actors Ajith and Vijay too have suggested that Nadigar Sangam hold a silent protest. And there are many other actors in Kollywood who agree. Meanwhile, a huge dais has been erected at Nadigar Sangam office in preparation for this fast indicating there would be scope for persons to speak. But it might not go beyond a vote of thanks from Nadigar Sangam officials.
 
It is to be noted that directors Ameer and Seeman were arrested on charges that their speech during the Rameshwaram protest (staged by Directors’ Council) was in total conflict with Indian laws defining freedom of speech. They have been subsequently released on bail.

At last, Kamal Hassan finds all girls

Kamal Hassan's Rs 125 crore magnum opus Marmayogi will have not one or two but four beautiful heroines -- Trisha, Shriya, Hema Malini and two-time National Award winner Shobhana. Shobhana is the latest to be a part of the trilingual film. Earlier she neither denied nor confirmed her role in the film stating that it would be better for Kamal Hassan to confirm the same.

 

According Srinivasan of Pyramid Saimira group of production, the shooting for Marmayogi would commence sometime in mid-October. However, the date and exact location of the launch have not yet been finalised, he added. Besides Shivanasamudram water falls in Mandya district, many other places in Karnataka have been chosen for shooting the period film set in eighth century India.
