Summary:
A story of an auto driver and his love interest, laced with social elements. More aavakaaya and less biryani, but both not enough to satiate one's hunger!

What's it all about?
Mohd. Akbar Kalam (Kamal Kamaraju) drives an auto that he rents from Masterji (Rao Ramesh), a bigwig in the village of Devarakonda. Purushottam (Kameshwara Rao) and family migrate to the village from Polavaram, understandably as one of those families affected by the Polavaram project. They have to start their life afresh here, and Purushottam intends to set up a hotel in the village, while his daughter Lakshmi (Bindu Madhavi) wants to sell mango pickle ( aavakaya) and support the family. Akbar and Lakshmi meet frequently as she needs to go to nearby Vikarabad to get the required ingredients and hires his auto. A local political aspirant, Babbar Khan (Varun Jonnada), eyes Lakshmi and follows her frequently. Akbar suddenly faces the wrath of his villagers when he raises his voice against the problems in the village when the Chief Minister visits the village.

Eventually, he turns out to be a hero in the same village, much to the dislike of the aspiring politicians of the village, Masterji and Babbar Khan, and they even try to force him to leave the village. Meanwhile, Lakshmi and Akbar get closer to each other. Purushottam is one of the many traditional Hindus who dislike Muslims as people who intend only harm to the State. What did Akbar's local enemies do against him, how Akbar tries to impress Purushottam about his love towards the latter's daughter and his credibility as an individual form the rest of the story.

Performances
Cast:
Kamal Kamaraju, who met the audiences' eye in Godavari as a haughty fellow now comes to fit into the role of a poor auto driver striving to excel as an individual. He succeeds with his performance to most part, but he needs to improve his diction. His expressions need some toning too, at places. There's no second thought to say he has the required ease in front of the camera, though. How much he alone can carry a film as a hero cannot be seen yet, since this film does its trade as a Sekhar Kammula-produced film all the way. Telugu girl Bindu Madhavi who debuted as the female lead is homely, beautiful, and expressive. However, her voice is still dubbed by Suneetha. She is a good fit into roles that require traditional and/or semi-modern girl of current day. Rao Ramesh has a different role compared to his previous films but he is misfit in the role, his acting is somewhat theatrical. Varun Jonnada joins him as a rough guy with not-so-good intentions. Praneeth as hero's friend offers very good comedic relief in the film with his ease and histrionics that sometimes do go overboard, but as is required for the role. The rest of the cast fit in their roles and do the job well.

Technical Departments:
Anish Kuruvilla has the skill to visualize a story well and his debut (commercial) film is very different from routine films. The story weaves through too many elements, thus diluting itself a bit, more so when some of the elements are selectively blinded off as the story moves on. Examples include the seemingly abrupt elimination of the bad guys, absence of heroine's family through a part of the first half, scenes highlighted more than they are dealt with or are connected to the main theme of the film (such as the hero appearing for B.Com. examinations, or children trying to get their fill of water in the pots), etc. The narration too is excruiatingly slow-paced, like some other films by his mentor and friend Sekhar Kammula. However, a big minus for the director from a commercial point of view is his taking that deals with the theme indirectly, giving the main theme itself the feel of being an undercurrent!

The screenplay traverses through several threads of the story, but the narration is still focused, one could say looking at it one way. However, most regular audience might find it hard to see why there were so many elements in the film or what the director even tried to tell in this film. Dialogues are adequate, with comedy where possible through the role of hero's friend. Makeup for the lead roles in the last scenes "two years later" is shown differently, with appreciable care. Visuals are one highlight of the film, with perfect wide-angle shots and okay-kind mid-long and closeup shots. Picturization of songs is neat, and the lyrics are all very apt to the situation; choreography is kept simple and adequate.

Background score reminds of Ilayaraja at places, and music on the whole is another highlight in the film; tunes by debutant Manikanth Kadri, the son of veteran saxophone player Kadri Gopalnath, are catchy and melodious. Editing is crisp. Production values are quite appreciable. The director should be appreciated for an unbiased stand on Hindu-Muslim issues and political aspects indicated in the film, such as migration due to Polavaram project, etc. He has the care and talent, but how much he can reach the commercial cinema standards, or would he be an artsy director like Sekhar Kammula and create his own fan base, is to be seen.

Minor Overlook:

• The number plate for the Enfield is shown as AP 10 BH 786 in all scenes except one closeup where it goes with the AP 9M series!    
• Timeline in the movie is a bit inconsistent, such as two months for     disposing of lands in Polavaram, the hero appearing for supplimentary exams twice in not much a gap, and more.    
• The hero and heroine decide to speak only in English, but then that     never happens... much like in real life, eh?

Bottom Line:
Avakayi Biryani has good intentions but the execution of the movie is not palatable to everyone. It is too slow . General audiences can feel boredome and for them it looks more like a docudrama. Yet the film has good performances, music, visuals, and is totally clean! Can appeal to niche audiences. The makers should be appreciated for such a film with good intentions. While the title Avakai Biryani is not exactly justified, the film can get its initial audiences, thanks to the name Sekhar Kammula that's associated with the film. Promotion of the film might take it further, but the slower pace and unclear narration might affect the film's run and acceptance.

Poetic justice in TDP?

It will be a poetic justice if Balakrishna takes over the mantle of Telugu Desam Party.
Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi is saying ‘change’ as his main objective.  TDP president Chandrababu Naidu already said that he had changed!

When NTR declared Balakrishna as his heir in politics, Naidu forced to change it.  Initially, Naidu did not care Jr NTR.  When he came to know that Jr NTR has sizeable fan following among the Nandamuri heroes, he started to use him. Taraka Ratna did not digest the fact that Jr NTR is being given importance and he was virtually ignored by not calling to the first two luncheon meetings at Naidu’s residence.  Tarak started a different campaign saying that Balakrishna will be the CM candidate.  Of course, Taraka Ratna took volte face.

Ironically, Naidu is worried about the super success of yuva garjana.  Most of the Nandamuri fans will attend the meeting.  Balaiah fans may demand their pound of flesh in the party.

Nandamuri family members are cynosure of all eyes

 Huge crowds are thronging the venue of  Yuva Garjana here to witnessthe debut of film star Nandamuri Balakrishna in politics on Wednesday evening. There is so much excitement among the Telugu Desam party (TDP) activists on the prospects of the party once being led by Balakrishna, son of party founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. According to estimates by the party leaders, the crowd is swelling by hour at the venue with more people pouring into the city from all directions. As many as 50,000 people have already arrived in Vijayawada on their way to Guntur. TDP MLA Paritala Sunita, who is entrusted with the job of transporting the activists from Vijayawada to Guntur, said the party had deployed 110 buses to transport the people. The buses had so far made 50 trips between Vijayawada and Guntur so far by 12 noon, she said.
A life-size portrait of Balakrishna has been fastened on the dais in a hurry following the demand from the activists of Nandamuri Fans Association. The people started making to the city from the early hours by all means of transport. They look so excited over the entry of Balakrishna, one of the Nandamuri family members, into politics.

TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, who was to have travelled to Guntur from Vijayawada airport by road, flew in here by helicopter for security reasons. Balakrishna, Kalyanram and Tarakratna are yet to arrive.

Meanwhile, Nandamuri Harikrishna has been supervising all the arrangements for the meeting, which is billed to be the biggest show by the TDP after its defeat in the last elections.

The fans associations of Telugu thespian N T Rama rao and Balakrishna have taken most of the responsibility of organising the public meeting. Though politicians, belonging to the TDP, are also taking part, Nanamuri family members remain cynosure of all eyes

Garjana grand success!

 

NBK at Yuvagarjana in Guntur Nandamuri Balakrishna on Wednesday (Nov 5) took plunge into active politics. The stage for his political entry was Yuva Garjana, a political meeting held by Telugu Desam Party. And it was a grand success. Over 10 lakh people attended the mammoth meeting on the sprawling campus of Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur. NBK's  political arangetram was well recieved by his fans. NBK is also extremely happy. “Naa Gunde Nindindi..Naa Kallu Challabaddayi,”  he said in his maiden political speech. Although his speech was short, his fans went into frenzy when he delivered the speech. He vowed to help bring TDP back to power and also asked his fans to extend the support for the party. In his speech, he attacked the current government and said that democracy had touched nadir in its rule. Two small aircraft showered flower petals on the dais and on the crowd. TDP leaders claimed that 15 lakh people attended the meeting. So huge was the crowd that the  national highway No.5 was clogged. There were massive traffic jams up to 50 km. Chandrababu Naidu, Balakrishna and Harikrishna reached the venue by two helicopters as thousands of vehicles were stranded on all the roads leading to the venue. Apart from NBK, the other Nandamuri stars - Harikrishna, Kalyan Ram, Tarakaratna - also attended the meeting. Hero NTR gave a miss due to differences with TD President Chandrababu Naidu over an 'assembly seat'. But he is expected to convass for the party before the polls. Actor Vishnu, who is busy shooting for his film Saleem, took time off for an exclusive chat.    Did SRK and Preity inspire you to join the big league of owning a cricket team?    I do agree that SRK and Preity made it easier for me to convince my board of directors or else they would have rubbished it as a weird idea. Being a cricket lover, this was a great opportunity for me to get involved with the sport. Unlike some Bollywood stars, I am happy to own the home team and it gives me a sense of pride. Likewise, our league is in no way inferior to other leagues. Initially, I did have some doubts about the league but jam-packed stadiums and the overwhelming response changed my view. Right now, our team is well-placed with four wins out of five to reserve our quarter-final berth. The finals would be a great event to watch out for, irrespective of the teams participating in it.    Do you like to influence team composition? Also how do you justify the new amalgamation of cricket and cinema?    I would leave the choice of team composition to the captain and coach. I believe it's their prerogative. I will be involving myself in designing marketing strategies and as an ambassador to fetch maximum mileage for our team. I don't think there is anything wrong in cricket and cinema coming together, since glamour does add to the brand value. But beyond that, it's real talent that triumphs.    How does it feel to give up on bachelorhood now that you are engaged?   It is yet to sink in but I am happy that our long courtship has been formally solemnised by our parents. Crowd cheers Chiru for his support to Telangana

After announcing his party’s support for the separate State demand, Prajarajyam Party president Chiranjeevi received a tremendous response yesterday. Chiranjeevi, who began this third day of Praja Ankita Yatra from the coal town of Godavarikhani, found his convy thronged by hundreds of people and their sudden repeated cheers over his support to Telangana. But TRS and BJP activists tried to play spoilsport by surfacing at the yatra and demanding that he make a more clear statement on the Telangana issue.    Responding to their demand, the actor-turned-politician said he was clear and transparent in his views and his party’s stand on the issue. “I have made it very clear that the Prajarajyam Party would go by the aspirations of the people and would accept the formation of the separate state. It would not halt the process in no way,” he told the protesters. Chiranjeevi then thanked the TRS and BJP activists for joining him with their party flags during his ankita yatra. “Only those people who are not clear on their demand for the separate State will find fault with our stand on the separate state issue,” he said.   Later, Chiranjeevi paid tributes to the coal workers who died in coal mines accidents and demanded the government to improve the working conditions of the coal workers. “There is also disparity in their work and wages they get. My party, if voted to power, would suitably increase their wages and would give them more honour in their work,” Chiranjeevi added. Chiranjeevi said that the root cause of many problems was corruption and promised to fight against the corruption in all spheres. “Only low level employees who take Rs 5,000 or less bribes are being caught and punished, while those taking hundreds of crores are going scot-free,” he said.

TDP releases documentary on NTR

To showcase the life and times of NTR on the grand function of Yuva Garjana, Telugu Desam Party today (November 3, 2008) released a documentary on matinee idol NTR. Late NTR’s clippings from various films and mythological dramas with a supporting voice over was released by Telugu Desam Party president Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

Veteran director K Raghavendra Rao is said to have made this docu-drama. It will be played on the huge screen at the meeting of Yuvagarjana – a stage where Nandamuri Balakrishna announces his political entry.

Yuva Garjana: Telugu Desam hires 23 trains

 

The Telugu Desam Party is all geared up to make the “Yuva Garjana” at Guntur on November 5 the “mother of all rallies” by mobilising about 15 lakh people and ferrying people from all parts of the State in trains, buses, lorries and other modes of transport.
 

The party wants it to make it the biggest show ever, as film stars from NTR’s family —Balakrishna, Kalyan Ram and Taraka Ratna – will make their first public appearance from the Telugu Desam platform, though it has lost some of its gloss with Junior NTR keeping away from the show.
 

The scale of the transportation arrangements could be gauged from the fact that the party has already hired 23 trains, paying a fare of Rs.9. 8 lakh each and sought more from the South Central Railway. The maximum of three trains will come from Chittoor, while two each will come from Kadapa, Kurnool, Nizamabad and Warangal and one each from other districts. In addition, it is planning to hire 500 buses to bring people from each district, besides innumerable lorries. “There is tremendous demand for more buses from the districts,” K. Rammohana Rao of the transportation committee told The Hindu.
 

With Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu making it clear to the State Committee on Thursday that they should go all-out to make the “garjana” a benchmark for all future rallies, the leaders promptly got down to the business of working out the logistics from making arrangements for transportation, accommodation and food. The meeting itself is being held on a sprawling 300-acre site.
 

Meanwhile, the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerran Naidu released a CD and audio cassette that has a distinct Telangana touch in some of the songs. Others present were G. Butchaiah Choudary, S. Venugopala Chary and Kaluva Srinivasulu.

Rajni-Kamal to participate in protest

 
The Nadigar Sangam will observe a fast tomorrow to protest against the killing of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka. The participation of the twin stalwarts of Kollywood – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan – was doubtful until today. But now both have confirmed their participation in the Nadigar Sangam’s protests to be held on November 1st. But they have requested Nadigar Sangam not to force them to talk at the protest. In fact, they have also requested Nadigar Sangam to preclude anyone from airing their thoughts as one would be overwhelmed with emotions at the juncture and might end up saying something untoward at the venue. Coincidentally, the Tamil Nadu Government too has requested the Nadigar Sangam to hold a silent protest.
 
Actors Ajith and Vijay too have suggested that Nadigar Sangam hold a silent protest. And there are many other actors in Kollywood who agree. Meanwhile, a huge dais has been erected at Nadigar Sangam office in preparation for this fast indicating there would be scope for persons to speak. But it might not go beyond a vote of thanks from Nadigar Sangam officials.
 
It is to be noted that directors Ameer and Seeman were arrested on charges that their speech during the Rameshwaram protest (staged by Directors’ Council) was in total conflict with Indian laws defining freedom of speech. They have been subsequently released on bail.
