goes the beautiful song picturized among the locales of Kulu-Manali and Kashmir. Tollywood’s latest sensation Hansika Motwani coupled with ‘six-pack’ energetic Allu Arjun stole the hearts of the audience with their performances and gave Tollywood the first hit of the year 2007. In this article, we present the top 10 movies of 2007 sorted by their release dates.
1. Desamuduru (12th Jan)
Puri Jagan continued his winning streak in 2007 after his mega-successful Pokiri last year. His simple story line coupled with interesting screenplay along with Chakri’s foot-tapping music captivated the moviegoers. Allu Arjun’s ease in performing comedy scenes and his innovative dance steps enthralled the audience. His portrayal of Bala Govindam’s character can be considered his best performance in recent years. Hansika Motwani’s glamour also added to the success of the movie along with Pradeep Rawat and Jeeva’s action.
2. Dhee (13th Apr)
Srinu Vytla proved his command over comedy subjects when he churned his hit of the year ‘Dhee’ and gave some relief to the Telugu audience from the summer heat. Kona Venkat’s chirpy one-liners coupled with Vishnu’s timing and body language was liked by the audience. Brahmanandam, Vishnu and Sunil’s comedy stood as a highlight in the movie. ‘Nannu involve cheyyakandi’ being the highlight. Genelia continued her success this year after last year’s Bommarillu. Srihari’s controlled performance in comedy and action scenes added to the success of the movie.
3. Aadavari Matalaku Ardhale Verule (27th Apr)
Victory Venkatesh completed 22 years in Tollywood with this year and his ability to give hits seems to be increasing year by year. His first hit of this year was AMAV. In this movie he plays the character of 'Ganesh', an unemployed bachelor for 10 years who lands in a software company with the inspiration of Keerthi. His exceptional comedy timing coupled with his trademark emotions in drama scenes were instantly appreciated by the audience. Trisha continued her form in this year with this movie. She enacted the role very well. Selva Raghavan's direction, Ramesh-Gopi's dialogues and Yuan Shankar Raja's music all added to the success of the movie.
4. Shivaji (15th June)
Rajni mania continued in the year 2007 as well when he teamed up with Shankar for the first time and gave the hit film Shivaji. Shankar developed another story based on his favorite subject of 'corruption'. Rajni enacts the role of an NRI millionaire who returns to India to help the poor people of India only to get duped by the local corrupt kingpin. He returns back with a vengeance and robs the black money from the rich and helps the poor. His mannerisms, style and his imitation of the dances of NTR, ANR and Chiru were received very well by the audience. Shriya got a chance to show her acting talent with this move while Nayana Tara sizzed in an item song.
5. Lakshyam (5th Jul)
Gopichand continued his success with debutante directors this year with ‘Lakshyam’ after his last year’s Ranam. Lakshyam is a story of the revenge of a younger brother against the villain for the brutal killing of his elder cop who is a sincerely cop. Gopichand’s ease in action sequences coupled with his subtle emotions in emotional and romantic scenes showed his acting prowess. Anushka portrayed her role with ease. 6. Yamadonga (15th Aug)
S.S.Rajamouli coupled with NTR Jr and completed a hat trick hit with this film. Made on his home banner 'Vishwamitra Creations', this socio-fantasy movie evoked very high interest from the audience. NTR Jr worked very hard for this movie and slimmed down drastically which made him look very handsome in the movie. His dialogue delivery coupled with his dexterity in dances captivated the audience. Mohan Babu as Yama Dharmaraju acted very well. His dialogue delivery in 'Grandhika Telugu' was also well received by the audience. Priyamani, Mamtha Mohandas acted well for their roles. Ananda Sai's excellent work with the sets, Prem Rakshit's variety steps, Keeravani's music and the ability of Rajamouli to churn a commercial entertainer were the plusses of the movie.
7. Chandamama (6th Sep)
Creative director Krishnavamshi continued his hit-spree this year with the movie Chandamama. He selected a simple story of a girl loving someone else when her parents fix her marriage with someone else. Lakshmi Gopal’s dialogues coupled with the impeccable timing of Ahuti Prasad and Navadeep proved as a major highlight of the film. The rest of the cast like Shiva Balaji, Kajal and Nagababu all acted well in their roles.
8. Happy Days (29th Sep)
Shekhar Kammula proved he is here to stay in Tollywood with his hat trick hit ‘Happy Days’. Arguably the favorite movie of this year to all college going youth, this movie was released in the USA before it was released in India, which speaks volumes about the confidence of this genius director on his movie. Woven around a bunch of freshers entering into a college, this movie shows their relationships over their entire 4 years of college life. Perfect casting, catchy songs, neat screenplay and spectacular direction showed its effect when this movie broke many records in many centers of AP and abroad. We wish Shekhar Kammula gives many more hits like this in the future to Tollywood.
9. Thulasi (12th Oct)
Venkatesh gave his second hit of the year and completed his hat trick with the movie ‘Thulasi’. Boyapati Seenu continued where he left with Bhadra when he churned out this hit, thanks to the dialogues by veterans ‘Paruchuri Brothers’ and the performances of the lead pair Venkatesh and Nayana Tara. Boyapati Seenu showed his directorial prowess by extracting proper fine tuned performances in comedy, action and sentimental scenes from all the cast. Devisri’s music also helped in the success of the movie.
10. Mantra(14th Dec)
Charmme proved her sway over the audience with the surprise hit of the year ‘Mantra’. This suspense thriller directed by new comer Thulasi ram definitely succeeds in scaring and entertaining the audience. Excellent sound effects, gripping screenplay, all round performances by the lead pair Charmme and Shivaji along with Sivendra’s cinematography resulted in the success of the movie.
This year only Venkatesh, NTR Jr and Allu Arjun from the top heroes list could give appreciable hits and the rest either did not act in movies or could not give hits. This year also did not witness any big hits from big banners. It remains to be seen how our big heroes and big banners will fare in the year 2008. This year witnessed the launch of the most promising hero in recent years, Ram Charan. Charan was introduced in the form of Chirutha by Ashwini Dutt and Puri Jagan.
Story
Mantra’s (Charmme) parents die when she was young and she lives with her friend Vinny (Karuna Sri). She inherits an ancestral property called 'Mantra Nilayam' in the outskirts of Hyderabad. Mantra Nilayam is called as haunted house because of two untimely deaths in that farm house few years back. She wants to sell it off, but no body comes forward to buy the property due to its reputation. A professor comes forward to buy that house with a condition that somebody should stay there for three months. Hero (Sivaji) is a small time goon who looks after land settlements. Hero wants to stay in the house so that he would get a commission of the sale once 'Mantra Nilayam' is sold. The rest of the story is all about how Hero demystifies everything.
Artists Performance
Charmme: Charmme is extremely good in a shot where she acts like as if she has seen the ghost. She is very good in the title role. She exposed liberally in the film. She has put on a bit of excess weight and it shows up in certain odd angles. The dubbing provided by Sunita should also be commended.
Sivaji: Sivaji is the man for all the seasons in Telugu film industry. He is just amazing and fits into any role effortlessly. He did a typical role of a Pokiri in this film. His comedy timing is excellent. He brings credibility to his character.
Others: The fine thing about this film are characterizations. All the characters in the film are well defined. Chitram Seenu is good. Vijay creates humor. Jeeva is excellent. Kausha did a special role in this film. Mallikharjuna Rao and others are adequate.
Technical Departments:
Story - screenplay - direction: Story deserves a special mention in this film. Story of the film is compact and the storyline is unpredictable laced with suspense. However these kind of stories are good for 1 and half hour films. Hence the narration becomes too slow. The initial part of the film is not interesting. But the story takes interesting twists and turns once Sivaji starts living in Mantra Nilayam. Screenplay of the film is nice. The director should be commended for sticking to his own plot in stead of trying to be commercial for the sake of masses. It is a decent effort by the debutant director Tulasi Ram.
Other departments: Background music by Anand is excellent. Cinematography, Color grading and sounds play vital role in any horror films. And all these three departments are good in this film. Since it is a horror film, the director preferred to shoot the most of the film is dark rooms and during the night. Dialogues are adequate. Choreography for Maha song (an unabashed lift of My Hump (Black Eyed Peas)) by Prem Rakshit is good. Editing is ok.
Analysis: If the motive of any horror film is to scare you, this film succeeds to that aspect. And the basic premise of any thriller is to maintain suspense till the end of the film. This film succeeds in suspense aspect too. But the narration of the film is too long. There are many unnecessary shots in the film which are just inserted for creating horror. Certain logics are missing. If you like horror flicks, it's a must watch.
Now, it’s a well-known fact that Pawan Kalyan has created sensation with the songs of 'Bhadri' and 'Khushi'. It set off a new trend in the industry.
Now, we hear, Pawan is about to set a new trend once again. Though it has become common to have rap interludes within a song, Pawan has gone a step ahead and is doing a full song with Baba Sehgal.
Baba, as is well-known, is the most rap singer in Hindi in India. Sari gama padanisa, karo karo jara jalsa… goes the song. Baba Sehgal had earlier sung for Chiranjeevi in 'Rickshaavadu'. It’s 12 years since he did it and now, he is singing for Pawan.
The film is being produced by the Geeta Arts and directed by Trivikram. Music is by Devisri Prasad. Another news from Tollywood grapevine is that Devisri too danced in a song, just like he did in 'Shankara Dada MBBS'.
One of the most anticipated projects of this year is Puri Jagannath's Chirutha that has Megastar Chiranjeevi's son Ramcharan Teja making debut. The industry and the fans are with all ears open for any information on this project. The production is in full swing.
As per the sources, Puri Jagannath's son is playing junior Ramcharan Teja in the film (appears for childhood episodes of Ramcharan Teja). If this is true then it will turn out debut film for Megastar's son and mega director's son too.
Also, the makers are planning to release the film on 22nd September. No prizes for guessing on the speciality of the date. It is the same day that Chiranjeevi's first film Pranam Kareedu released (though Chiru's first film was Punadi Rallu, it was Pranam Kareedu which released first).
By and large the Diamond Jubilee celebrations are gaining notoriety instead of popularity for the very reason that fans of Chiranjeevi and Mohanbabu are creating hell in streets in different places Andhra Pradesh. No need to mention of the places. Wherever the fans of a particular hero are present, they start burning the effigies or photo papers of the other hero. The fans are so crazy that they don’t even care for the peace efforts by both their heroes, on television screens. Chiranjeevi and Mohanbabu appealed to their fans not to indulge in such activities. Mohanbabu says what ever they spoke during the Diamond Jubilee festival was the internal matter of the festival and this is not the issue, any thing to do with fans. “We (me and Chiranjeevi) are friends for more than three decades. We acted together in many films and continue visit each other’s houses to attend any festivities held in each others houses”, said Mohanbabu. Chiranjeevi too appealed to fans that what they were doing was wrong and he even saluted his fans and appealed to stop this and don’t bring shame to the many social service activities they were involved. Nobody said anything about me nor I said anything that insults Mohanbabu. Please direct all these efforts in undertaking more such service activities. So also said Pawan Kalyan, representing his elder brother saying that the acts they were resorting to is causing a lot of pain to his ‘Annayya’. The younger blood of that family and raising hero Allu Aravind’s son, Arjun too said the same on his visit to the injured persons admitted into hospital adds a line after consoling them. But on a question, he added they won’t keep quiet if some thing is said against Chiranjeevi.
There were days when fans of NTR and ANR were dabbing the posters of their heroes with cow dung. There were also days when the fans of other heroes also resorted to street fights, in olden days which included stabbing. Krishna went on record that he did not even know where and who started his ‘Krishna Sena’. All these issues point out at the fans’ lack of understanding and taking law into their own hands even without the knowledge of their heroes. In fact this fall out after that huge function held for three days and telecast by Maa TV, has blurred the total mission behind holding the Diamond Jubilee of the Telugu cinema. Today people only remember this side effect than more the main function, blurring the whole festival. Hope this kind of ugly reaction of fans of both artistes should end now.
Added to that there are reports from Hyderabad Film chamber, demanding the organizers to give an account of what they collected and what they spent and on what. The orginazing committee quickly responded stating that this part of expenditure is no body’s business and nobody has right to ask. This is also their private business. Any way there are governmental sources to whom they are responsible. This followed the tirade against press by the secretary K.S.Rama Rao.
Who is a ‘legend’ and who is ‘celebrity’?
The whole thing began with Mohanbabu questioning the organizers what did they mean by ‘Legend’ and ‘Celebrity’. Many gave their mind on this in press and outside. A legend is one whose legacy continues from his life time to the other generation after him or her. Ghatasala is a legend for example. The word celebrity is a common word used to almost all in the film field, especially. Celebrities are those who are being watched day in and day out by people of those fields and also others, from the positive sense. That celebrity ends with his life. He turns into a legend when his memory and work continues even in the next generation.
It is well aware how Mega Star Chiranjeevi reacted to the comments made by Mohanbabu during the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Telugu cinema marking the completion of 75 years of Telugu film industry.
Again, Mohanbabu convened another press meet, after KS Rama Rao's misbehaviour at a press conference, and made it clear, saying, 'I did not make any adverse remarks against Chiranjeevi but only found fault with the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Committee on the lapses. Chiranjeevi is talking about the ill-treatment to Telugus in Goa and Delhi film festivals but I highlighted the ill-treatment meted out to our Telugu film industry people by our own people. I don't know why Chiranjeevi reacted so wildly on that day with lots of emotion.'
Reacting over the remarks made by Mohanbabu against Chiranjeevi, the Mega Star fans took out mock funeral processions for Mohanbabu's effigy and burnt them. Even they started making efforts to intensify their agitation.
In this backdrop, Pawan Kalyan issued a statement on behalf of Chiranjeevi saying, 'Dear fans. Don't resort to agitations. Your agitations are causing mental agony to our brother Chiranjeevi. Don't react to any comment by anyone. Chiranjeevi fans are said to be very disciplined. Don't spoil the image and we, the Mega Brothers, appeal to everyone to stop all kinds of agitations.'

"We don't keep quiet if Chiranjeevi is insulted by anyone", said Allu Arjun this morning meeting the Chiranjeevi fans who were injured in protest against Mohan Babu and KS Rama Rao recently.
He also added saying, "I'm not the one who can say about the issue happened at Vajrotsavam. Already elders have told fans to maintain poise. I can only say that none can keep quiet if Chiranjeevi is criticized".
The repercussions after the speeches of Chiranjeevi and Mohan Babu are still continuing and everyone from the clan of Chiranjeevi is giving statement everyday. Yesterday, Pawan Kalyan asked fans to maintain poise and that is known for all.
Mohan Babu unleashed his feelings in the fresh Press Meet held this morning. Here are the highlights of it : Saying about his relation with Chiranjeevi, Mohan Babu said, "Chiranjeevi is my close friend. I have no clashes with him. We both go for the functions in each other's house. I questioned the Vajrotsavam Committee for the injustice done. I didn't point out anything in Chiranjeevi. I don't know why he turned so emotional".
Irked over the remarks made by Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Committee convener KS Rama Rao, the journalists held a meeting to condemn his attitude.
The meeting was chaired by AP Press Academy chairman and president of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists Deveulapally Amar. Hyderabad Press Club secretary Suresh, Film Critics Association president Lagadapati Babu Rao, senior film journalists Gudipudi Srihari, Prabhu participated in the briefing. The meeting condemned the remarks of KS Rama Rao in unequivocal terms.
While some of them went to the extent of saying, 'The journalists are not in a position to learn from KS Rama Rao on how to write a report, how to give a headline and where to place the report. If he wants to teach such things, he could as well set up a college on his own and teach his students all that.'
Regarding the use of word 'Goonda' against senior film journalist Prabhu, the journalists demanded that Rama Rao should tender an unconditional apology. Film reporter from The Hindu Sunitha was among those who spoke on the occasion.
Senior journalist Prabhu threatened that he would stage a dharna in front of Film Chamber office demanding an apology from KS Rama Rao and advised the latter to withdraw his remarks.
KS Ramarao had some serious verbal exchanges with a segment of the media and the press during a press meet that he organized to discuss about the success of Vajrotsavam event.
Instructions are given not to air the speeches of Mohan Babu and Chiranjeevi anymore as they may ignite further rivalry among film fraternity.
The speeches attracted the attention of many as they are rare. While Mohan Babu's 'open talk' raised curtains for inside stories, Chiranjeevi's emotional speech surprised everyone.
Adding to this, KS Rama Rao took initiative today and called for Press Meet this evening to clarify certain issues relating to Vajrotsavam. The Press Meet is going to be held this evening.
We have to wait and see what interesting things that KS Rama Rao would say.
The "Time Capsule" unveiled at the concluding day of the three-day "Telugu Cinema Vajrotsavam" at the HICC, Madhapur, Hyderabad, reached the office of the AP Film Chamber of Commerce. It would be available for the film industry people, movie lovers and general public to drop their valuable messages and notes.
It will be sealed after fifteen days and will be reopened for publishing a souvenir or compilation in commemoration of the forthcoming 100 years celebrations of the Telugu Cinema in 2032. To note here, Producer and key functionary of the TCV organizing committee, Allu Aravind, had already informed the relevance and importance of the "Time Capsule" when it was brought on to the stage.
Already doyen of Tollywood Dr. Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Union Minister Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, media magnate Ramoji Rao had dropped their messages into the capsule. Highlight is that Megastar Chiranjeevi who declined the honor as "Legend" also surrendered the medal, citation, shield and shawl into the capsule.
Spokesman for Mohan Babu has issued the following text to Cinema Prapancham. Raju, the spokesperson is calling for a press meet in Guntur tomorrow to react on what has happened today in Tenali, Kodur and Guntur. He says, “Many film artistes, technicians have been left out and people like Krishna, Vijaya Nirmala, Krishnam Raju were not given their due honour. Questioning as to why it has happend and to ensure that it doesn’t take place in the future Mohan Babu had voiced his opinion.
He didn’t take anyone’s names. The committee members are supposed to react to this but not those who have no connection with the commitee. But here a hero has pointed out at Mohan Babu. While Mohan Babu had chosen to speak during the function, the latter did it during the vote of thanks after one hour forty five minutes, after noticing Mohan Babu had left the venue.
We all are fans and we remained silent and also because it’s a matter that should not concern us. But the fans of the hero in question have burnt Mohan Babu’s effigy in Tenali, Kodur and other places. Fans should stay away from this. Oka poster ki oka bomma ki nalugu kattalu petti, battalu katti 500 kms dooranga burn cheste adi heroism kaadhu. The fans should come and do it in front of Mohan Babu’s house. Politicians resort to these kind of activities because they have no fans. But film stars have fans and we are not supposed to do it.
Raashtram antha alla kallolam avuthundi. Evarintiki vallu herolu. Don’t provoke us, violence or silence we are ready.” A very emotional Raju adds that he is willing to have a meeting and a debate and is holding a PC tomorrow at Guntur. “We are a disciplined lot, but if you provoke us then we will not sit quietly. There are many fans who have been upset, fans of Krishnam Raju, Krishna, Mahesh, etc. etc. All of us will get together. So put an end to all this immediately.”
Meanwhile Chiranjeevi Fans President Swami Naidu says, “It is not the work of the fans it must have been done by unknown people. Maa prameyam emi ledhu.”

Finally, Chiranjeevi has stepped into restrain his fans who have been burning the effigies of Mohan Babu. He urged his fans not to get emotional and resort to acts such burning effigies and other disgraceful means.
“No one has said against me. I spoke at the function only to clarify some things. It is nothing personal. So I ask my fans to not to involve yourself into controversies,” he said.
“That is why my brother Pawan Kalyan responded immediately. But you took it to heart. I ask you to restrain from indulging in any unlawful acts. It is bad to drag in respectable personality Union minister Dasari Naryana Rao into this. No one is against me nor do I resent anyone. We should concentrate on charity work, not on destructive mode,” Chiranjeevi requested his fans.
He made the statment late on Saturday night (Feb 3).He appealed to his fans not to indulge in any kind of protest activated and appealed to his fans to maintain utmost restraint in the face of provocation. His message was clear: Forget and Forgive!
