I don’t mind item songs: Neetu

It’s not the easiest thing for a debutante to do a film which has two other new faces. But Neetu Chandra who made her Bollywood debut in Garam Masala two and half years ago, not only managed to get noticed, but even got plum roles thereafter.

Neetu claims it was a gamble that she took deliberately because she was sure an Akshay Kumar-John Abraham starrer would bring in the crowds, something that a solo heroine project with a newcomer “may not have assured”. And she was not wrong. She did Madhur Bhandarkar’s Traffic Signal and now One Two Three directed by Ashwani Dhir.

Playing a Haryanvi cop who’s a bit of a loudmouth was fun. “I had to take special classes in diction to play that character. It was fun doing this film and my hard work seems to have paid off as I have been appreciated for the role,” says Neetu.

Neetu’s kitty is full right now with Rahul Dholakia’s Mumbai Cutting, Dibakar Banerjee’s Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and PC Sreeram’s Flat No13-B.

Most outsiders have a tough time in carving their own place in the film industry. What makes Neetu so lucky? The perky actress says “luck” isn’t the only thing that has made her successful. “I choose my roles with care and pay close attention to the banner before signing on the dotted line. My hard work, positive energy, parents’ support and luck together has worked for me,” she adds. She’s also done her share of southern films and is currently working in her first Tamil film Yaavarum Nalam with actor Madhavan and director Puri Jagannath’s untitled Telugu film.

For a change, Neetu doesn’t come out with a politically correct answer when we ask her what she feels about ‘skin scenes’. As she says, “It entirely depends on the script. I don’t think it is a bad idea and if one can carry the character well, then nothing like it.” And even item songs are welcome. “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan did an amazing job in Kajra re and now Rakhi Sawant is fantastic in Krazzy 4, so what’s wrong in doing them. If they are shot well, I don’t mind item songs and will do them,” she says.

A family-oriented girl, Neetu spends “quality time” with her family, and is a black belt in Taekwondo and a basket ball player, a youth icon for Unicef and works for cancer and AIDS patients.

Guess what? She’s even got a sense of humour. If her hectic lifestyle doesn’t give her time for love, Neetu derives solace from the fact that she is “seeing eight to 10 guys — all the heroes of my films”.

Actress Shriya slaps molester in Tirupati

South Indian actress Shreya Saran was allegedly molested by an employee of a Hindu monastery during a visit to the famed Tirupati temple. The actress slapped the man and handed him over to her security guards. The actress, who co-starred with Tamil superstar Rajnikant in last year‘s blockbuster ‘Shivaji - The Boss‘, was allegedly molested in full public view when she was returning after offering prayers at the temple, some 180 km north of here, early Monday. Shreya did not file a police complaint.

The incident was repeatedly beamed on television channels late Tuesday. ‘The man misbehaved with me just as I was coming out of the temple. I slapped him and my security personnel did the rest. I firmly believe that every molestation victim should do what I did,‘ the actress was quoted as saying.

According to police sources who talked on phone from Tirupati, the transgressor was identified as Hari. Hari, who is working in a monastery located near the temple, was handed over to the local police by the Shreya‘s assistants. The man has since been released, as there is no case because of the absence of a complaint, sources added.

Rajini under fire from pro-Kannada outfits

Rajinikanth is under fire now from pro-Kannada outfits and political party leaders for making remarks against Kannadigas during his speech during the fast observed by Kollywood on Friday.

Even after Tamilnadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi’s decision to put the Hogenakkal issue on the backburner, until an elected government assumes office in Karnataka the fire over the remarks made by Rajinikanth has not gone out. The Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samithi (AKGHS) has said that it won’t allow superstar Rajinikant to ’step into the state’ or his films to be screened until he offers a public apology for remarks on Karnataka and Kannadigas!

Rajinkanth on his part has denied offending the sentiments of people of Karnataka. “It is a malicious propaganda unleashed against me by some people. I am not an unwise person to pass remarks that offend the sentiments of the people of Karnataka,” he said in a recorded statement released to some
regional television channels in Bangalore.

He clarified that while addressing the fast held by Tamil Film industry in Chennai on Friday, he only decried those who have been creating trouble, asking such people to be “kicked” (Odaikanum) and was not referring to all.

“I have not done any wrong. But I am not averse to tendering apology, if I had committed any wrong”, he said, adding “if stalwarts like Parvathamma Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Girish Karnad demanded my apology, I will certainly tender‘.

The first schedule of Charmi‘s untitled film in the direction of Solmon Prabhu is complete. Made on Cosmos Entertainment banner and Future Films jointly, the film underwent its muhurtam shot for Telugu version on March 17th. The grandeur of the achievement could be understood by the fact that it has collected more than seven crores on the first day as opposed to the average collection of 8 crores for the big films during the first week.
