Athidi Review

Review
Story Athidi (Mahesh Babu) is an orphan rescued by a Delhi couple when he was a kid. The couple also has a little daughter. But in a mishap, Athidi is framed as killer of the couple who gave him the shelter. He goes to the jail as a kid and grows up there. After releasing from Jail, he takes up the mission of eradicating evil elements in the society. He is in the search of two people. One is the daughter of the couple and the other one is the Kaizer who killed the couple. The rest of the story is all about how he locates them and finishes off the work.
Artists Performance
Mahesh Babu: Mahesh Babu is pretty stylish with his new hairdo. He continued same reckless characterization/mannerisms he enacted in Pokiri. He made sure that he mixed entertainment in fights in first half. There are quite a few emotional scenes in which Mahesh Babu gave perfect performance. Probably this is the first film in which Mahesh created comedy by getting drunk. He is pretty cool at it.
Others: Amrita Rao's styling/spontaneity did not suit the character and characterization. But she is good with emotions. Asish Vidyardhi managed to look funny and furious at the same time. Though he looks very weird in the film he managed to creates good laughs. Murali Sharma is pretty good and his performance in the climax is neat. Brahmanandam, Sunil and Venu Madhav are used for the comedy. Nassar, Kota, Ajay and Ravi Prakash are adequate. The child artists who donned the roles of jr. athidi, jr. amrita and heroine's sister are cute.

Technical Departments:
Story - screenplay - direction: Story and scenes of the film are old fashioned. But director used new technique efficiently to narrate the film. He is pretty creative when it comes to shoot action episodes. The way he has shown the future of the goons in the first fight is highly creative. The same goes with the scene in which an unsolicited home loan call disturbs the villain when he is highly tensed. But, director did not succeed in the screenplay aspect. The duration of 3 hours is too lengthy to narrate such a story. Director should have handled the vital aspect of the last 30 minutes well as it is the last 30 minutes that decides the fate of any film.
Other departments: Songs of the film are ok. The songs 'Khabadarani' and 'Satyam Emito' are highly aesthetic in visuals. The highly appreciated 'Rathraina Ok' song is not upto the expectations on the screen and the Anushka voice seem to have got dubbed by somebody else on the screen. Background music by Mani Sharma is good. Dialogues by Abbburi Ravi are good. Cinematography by Sameer Reddy is excellent. Editing of the film should have been better. Production values are extraordinary.
Analysis: First half of the film is decent as it established the characters and love track and then reveals a twist. The second half is about Athidi becoming the unsolicited bodyguard. The last 30 minutes of the film are heavy. The positive aspects of the film are Mahesh Babu and few fight sequences. The negative aspects of the film are heavy last half an hour, movie runtime and excessive violence. We have to wait and see how Telugu film lovers embrace this stylized flick.

A Bad Day For CHIRU FAMILY & FANS...

Tulasi Movie Review

Punchline: silent 1st half, violent 2nd halfGenre: Action Type: Straight Banner: Suresh Productions

Cast: Venkatesh, Nayana Tara, Sivaji, Ramya Krishna, Asish Vidyardhi, Jaya Prakash Reddy, Rahul Dev, Ravi Babu, Riaz Khan, Tanikella Bharani, Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao, Ali, Raghubabu, Jhansi & Shriya (item song)

Music: Devi Sri Prasad Dialogues: Paruchuri brothers Action: Kanal Kannan & Ram Lakshman Story: Boyapati Seenu & Akula SivaScreenplay - direction: Boyapati Seenu Producer: Suresh Release date: 12 October 2007

Review
Story Tulasi (Venkatesh) is a lovable guy who falls in love with a co-tourist Vasundhara (Nayana Tara) in Europe. They like each other and
get married. Then it is revealed that Tulasi comes from a family of factionists and he has an irresistible violent streak running in his blood. They bear a child and then Vasundhara keeps Tulasi away for his violent ways. The rest of the story is all about how he reasons out with his wife to get his family back.
Artists Performance

Venkatesh: Venkatesh is pretty good as Tulasi. His comedy timing and accent in the scene in which he imitates Jhansi is hilarious. The way he bites his tongue when is he is angry shows the typical angry expression of Palnadu area. He is very good in action sequences in the second half. However, it is appalling to see such a sensible actor like Venkatesh accepting to act in a climax scene that appears so inhumane (kidnapping a dieing kid).
Others: Nayana Tara did a meaty role where she has scope to display both glamour and histrionics. The kid Atulit is pretty cute. Sivaji did the role of heroine’s brother. Shriya did an item
song. Jhansi’s comedy as Kokapeta aunty is good. There are eight villains in the film, but the screen time spared for them is minimal. Asish Vidyardhi succeeded in portraying cruelty. Ramya Krishna did a doctor role. Ali’s comedy is bland. Raghu Babu did a typical comedy sidekick role.

Technical Departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic story of the film is clever amalgamation of various films like DDLJ (couples falling in love during transit trip in Europe), Daddy (wife separating from husband due to his weakness (kindness to friend in daddy and violence in Tulasi)), Anthahpuram (wife does not knowing about the violent past of husband), Yuvaraju (father - son
relationship) etc. The director could not establish love feelings in the story, but succeeded in creating high voltage action drama in the flashback episode shot in Seema. The director chose to show the softer side in the first half and violent angle in the second half.

Other departments: The songs of the film are good though each one of them is a rehashed version of Devi Sri Prasad’s own music. Background score in action sequences (‘we will rock you’ bgm coupled with Chatrapati and Stalin kind of hero background music) is good. Cinematography is alright. Dialogues are adequate. The are couple of scenes in this film that appear abrupt due to inadequate editing. Action sequences are well choreographed. The makers tried to blast various vehicles in flashback episode to excite masses.

Analysis: First half of the film is mediocre. Second half is better. But the climax of the film is inhumane. The plus points of the film are Venkatesh and the seema flashback episode. The negative points of the film are excessive violence in second half and inconsistency in the story narration. The commercial success of the film depends on how masses embrace this film.

Puri Jagan's son as Jr.Chirutha

One of the most anticipated projects of this year is Puri Jagannath's Chirutha that has Megastar Chiranjeevi's son Ramcharan Teja making debut. The industry and the fans are with all ears open for any information on this project. The production is in full swing.

As per the sources, Puri Jagannath's son is playing junior Ramcharan Teja in the film (appears for childhood episodes of Ramcharan Teja). If this is true then it will turn out debut film for Megastar's son and mega director's son too.

Also, the makers are planning to release the film on 22nd September. No prizes for guessing on the speciality of the date. It is the same day that Chiranjeevi's first film Pranam Kareedu released (though Chiru's first film was Punadi Rallu, it was Pranam Kareedu which released first).

'FAN' Wars

By and large the Diamond Jubilee celebrations are gaining notoriety instead of popularity for the very reason that fans of Chiranjeevi and Mohanbabu are creating hell in streets in different places Andhra Pradesh. No need to mention of the places. Wherever the fans of a particular hero are present, they start burning the effigies or photo papers of the other hero. The fans are so crazy that they don’t even care for the peace efforts by both their heroes, on television screens. Chiranjeevi and Mohanbabu appealed to their fans not to indulge in such activities. Mohanbabu says what ever they spoke during the Diamond Jubilee festival was the internal matter of the festival and this is not the issue, any thing to do with fans. “We (me and Chiranjeevi) are friends for more than three decades. We acted together in many films and continue visit each other’s houses to attend any festivities held in each others houses”, said Mohanbabu. Chiranjeevi too appealed to fans that what they were doing was wrong and he even saluted his fans and appealed to stop this and don’t bring shame to the many social service activities they were involved. Nobody said anything about me nor I said anything that insults Mohanbabu. Please direct all these efforts in undertaking more such service activities. So also said Pawan Kalyan, representing his elder brother saying that the acts they were resorting to is causing a lot of pain to his ‘Annayya’. The younger blood of that family and raising hero Allu Aravind’s son, Arjun too said the same on his visit to the injured persons admitted into hospital adds a line after consoling them. But on a question, he added they won’t keep quiet if some thing is said against Chiranjeevi.

There were days when fans of NTR and ANR were dabbing the posters of their heroes with cow dung. There were also days when the fans of other heroes also resorted to street fights, in olden days which included stabbing. Krishna went on record that he did not even know where and who started his ‘Krishna Sena’. All these issues point out at the fans’ lack of understanding and taking law into their own hands even without the knowledge of their heroes. In fact this fall out after that huge function held for three days and telecast by Maa TV, has blurred the total mission behind holding the Diamond Jubilee of the Telugu cinema. Today people only remember this side effect than more the main function, blurring the whole festival. Hope this kind of ugly reaction of fans of both artistes should end now.

Added to that there are reports from Hyderabad Film chamber, demanding the organizers to give an account of what they collected and what they spent and on what. The orginazing committee quickly responded stating that this part of expenditure is no body’s business and nobody has right to ask. This is also their private business. Any way there are governmental sources to whom they are responsible. This followed the tirade against press by the secretary K.S.Rama Rao.

Who is a ‘legend’ and who is ‘celebrity’?

The whole thing began with Mohanbabu questioning the organizers what did they mean by ‘Legend’ and ‘Celebrity’. Many gave their mind on this in press and outside. A legend is one whose legacy continues from his life time to the other generation after him or her. Ghatasala is a legend for example. The word celebrity is a common word used to almost all in the film field, especially. Celebrities are those who are being watched day in and day out by people of those fields and also others, from the positive sense. That celebrity ends with his life. He turns into a legend when his memory and work continues even in the next generation.

Don't resort to agitations, Pawan Kalyan tells fans

It is well aware how Mega Star Chiranjeevi reacted to the comments made by Mohanbabu during the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Telugu cinema marking the completion of 75 years of Telugu film industry.

Again, Mohanbabu convened another press meet, after KS Rama Rao's misbehaviour at a press conference, and made it clear, saying, 'I did not make any adverse remarks against Chiranjeevi but only found fault with the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Committee on the lapses. Chiranjeevi is talking about the ill-treatment to Telugus in Goa and Delhi film festivals but I highlighted the ill-treatment meted out to our Telugu film industry people by our own people. I don't know why Chiranjeevi reacted so wildly on that day with lots of emotion.'

Reacting over the remarks made by Mohanbabu against Chiranjeevi, the Mega Star fans took out mock funeral processions for Mohanbabu's effigy and burnt them. Even they started making efforts to intensify their agitation.

In this backdrop, Pawan Kalyan issued a statement on behalf of Chiranjeevi saying, 'Dear fans. Don't resort to agitations. Your agitations are causing mental agony to our brother Chiranjeevi. Don't react to any comment by anyone. Chiranjeevi fans are said to be very disciplined. Don't spoil the image and we, the Mega Brothers, appeal to everyone to stop all kinds of agitations.'

Mohan Babu's anguish unleashed in Press Meet

Mohan Babu unleashed his feelings in the fresh Press Meet held this morning. Here are the highlights of it : Saying about his relation with Chiranjeevi, Mohan Babu said, "Chiranjeevi is my close friend. I have no clashes with him. We both go for the functions in each other's house. I questioned the Vajrotsavam Committee for the injustice done. I didn't point out anything in Chiranjeevi. I don't know why he turned so emotional".

Coming to the aspect of legend he said, "KS Rama Rao said that I have to grow a lot to become a legend. I asked what more I have to grow? I'm the only producer who made more number of movies in Telugu after Ramanaidu and Ramoji Rao. Why can't I be called a legend? I was told that I will be recognized for 100 years celebrations of Tollywood. I don't stay alive by that time".

Talking about KS Rama Rao, he said, "KS Rama Rao says that he will give away the NTR Award. How can he do that"?

Saying about the injustice, Mohan Babu said, "Kantha Rao was not felicitated properly in the event. He was earlier called Jr. MGR. Is that the respect given for him? ANR was informed only at the last minute. Invitations weren't distributed properly. Journalists were insulted in the event. Is this the way of respecting Journalists?".

Pointing out the caste aspect he said, "Caste feeling cannot be pumped in film industry. Films cannot be successful by making them with artistes belonging to one caste. Artistes are beyond caste, creed and area"

Finally he said, "There is no relation between Vajrotsavam controversy and Fans".

Journalists condemn KS Rama Rao's remarks

Irked over the remarks made by Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Committee convener KS Rama Rao, the journalists held a meeting to condemn his attitude.

The meeting was chaired by AP Press Academy chairman and president of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists Deveulapally Amar. Hyderabad Press Club secretary Suresh, Film Critics Association president Lagadapati Babu Rao, senior film journalists Gudipudi Srihari, Prabhu participated in the briefing. The meeting condemned the remarks of KS Rama Rao in unequivocal terms.

While some of them went to the extent of saying, 'The journalists are not in a position to learn from KS Rama Rao on how to write a report, how to give a headline and where to place the report. If he wants to teach such things, he could as well set up a college on his own and teach his students all that.'

Regarding the use of word 'Goonda' against senior film journalist Prabhu, the journalists demanded that Rama Rao should tender an unconditional apology. Film reporter from The Hindu Sunitha was among those who spoke on the occasion.

Senior journalist Prabhu threatened that he would stage a dharna in front of Film Chamber office demanding an apology from KS Rama Rao and advised the latter to withdraw his remarks.

KS Ramarao's fight with media

KS Ramarao had some serious verbal exchanges with a segment of the media and the press during a press meet that he organized to discuss about the success of Vajrotsavam event.

The exchange went to an extent where the producer called behavior of one of the journalist as Rowdy.

To senior politician V Hanumantha Rao’s criticism that film industry didn’t mention former Chief Minister Chenna Reddy name during the celebrations, he said, “we did put up his statue at film chamber of commerce. Is it not enough?”

This all happened during the he sidelines of the press meet of congratulating the committee members for making the event ‘successful’. When senior film journalist Prabhu mentioned why he didn’t give passes to websites (except one website), K S Ramarao became irritated. “Yes, I don’t like websites. They write all gossips and negative items,” he said. Then he termed the senior journalist’s behavior as ‘rowdy act’.

Talking about the event, he said 'We are glad that we were successful in coordinating such a huge event in such an extraordinary way. However, there were a few unfortunate things that happened and I take full responsibility for it. I invited most of the industry myself. Somehow I missed on few people including VV Vinayak and EVV. I apologize to them. We personally invited Sobhan Babu to attend this function. But he said that he has been away from the industry for years and the moment he comes to Hyderabad, he might get temped to act in films. He politely refused our invitation. But some newspaper reported that we did not invite Sobhan Babu. There is an article in famous newspapers that we should not call this function as diamond jubilee and it is celebrated after 60 years. We are enclosing a copy of oxford dictionary which says that diamond jubilee term is used for both 60 years and 75 years.

Even a few things that were minor are blown out of proportion by the press. Even though this event was organized for the film industry, we did our best to accomodate the press too'.

Also, KS Ramarao confirmed that if NTR Award is not given out by the Govt in September, the industry is ready to it themselves.

Later he handed out shields to D Suresh babu, Relangi Narasimha Rao, Sarat Marar, C Kalyan, TVD Prasad, Ramprasad, Vallabha, Ashok Kumar etc.

MAA TV Bans Chiru and Mohan Babu's Speech

Instructions are given not to air the speeches of Mohan Babu and Chiranjeevi anymore as they may ignite further rivalry among film fraternity.

The speeches attracted the attention of many as they are rare. While Mohan Babu's 'open talk' raised curtains for inside stories, Chiranjeevi's emotional speech surprised everyone.

Adding to this, KS Rama Rao took initiative today and called for Press Meet this evening to clarify certain issues relating to Vajrotsavam. The Press Meet is going to be held this evening.

We have to wait and see what interesting things that KS Rama Rao would say.

Effigy burnt, Chiru fan says not our work

MohanbabuSpokesman for Mohan Babu has issued the following text to Cinema Prapancham. Raju, the spokesperson is calling for a press meet in Guntur tomorrow to react on what has happened today in Tenali, Kodur and Guntur. He says, “Many film artistes, technicians have been left out and people like Krishna, Vijaya Nirmala, Krishnam Raju were not given their due honour. Questioning as to why it has happend and to ensure that it doesn’t take place in the future Mohan Babu had voiced his opinion.

He didn’t take anyone’s names. The committee members are supposed to react to this but not those who have no connection with the commitee. But here a hero has pointed out at Mohan Babu. While Mohan Babu had chosen to speak during the function, the latter did it during the vote of thanks after one hour forty five minutes, after noticing Mohan Babu had left the venue.

We all are fans and we remained silent and also because it’s a matter that should not concern us. But the fans of the hero in question have burnt Mohan Babu’s effigy in Tenali, Kodur and other places. Fans should stay away from this. Oka poster ki oka bomma ki nalugu kattalu petti, battalu katti 500 kms dooranga burn cheste adi heroism kaadhu. The fans should come and do it in front of Mohan Babu’s house. Politicians resort to these kind of activities because they have no fans. But film stars have fans and we are not supposed to do it.

Raashtram antha alla kallolam avuthundi. Evarintiki vallu herolu. Don’t provoke us, violence or silence we are ready.” A very emotional Raju adds that he is willing to have a meeting and a debate and is holding a PC tomorrow at Guntur. “We are a disciplined lot, but if you provoke us then we will not sit quietly. There are many fans who have been upset, fans of Krishnam Raju, Krishna, Mahesh, etc. etc. All of us will get together. So put an end to all this immediately.”

Meanwhile Chiranjeevi Fans President Swami Naidu says, “It is not the work of the fans it must have been done by unknown people. Maa prameyam emi ledhu.”

“That is why my brother Pawan Kalyan responded immediately. But you took it to heart. I ask you to restrain from indulging in any unlawful acts. It is bad to drag in respectable personality Union minister Dasari Naryana Rao into this. No one is against me nor do I resent anyone. We should concentrate on charity work, not on destructive mode,” Chiranjeevi requested his fans.

He made the statment late on Saturday night (Feb 3).He appealed to his fans not to indulge in any kind of protest activated and appealed to his fans to maintain utmost restraint in the face of provocation. His message was clear: Forget and Forgive!

Chiru's fans arrested!

Vajrotsavam controversy still hasn't settled in Tollywood. The industry is still reeling under the aftermath of the undesirable events that took place on the concluding day.

Mohan Babu is about to conduct a press conference to explain his stand and diffuse/further fuel the tension in the industry. If that happens, Chiranjeevi too will be forced to call his own conference.

Meanwhile, soon after Mohan Babu's statements, Chiranjeevi's fans vented their anger against the former by burning his effigies in Krishna district. Freshly, the fans association President of Mohan Babu warned Chiranjeevi fans not to provoke, otherwise, consequences would be serious. The hold for Mohan Babu is strong in Chittoor district.

Chiranjeevi, who always tries to be in the good books of everyone failed to be so. Mohan Babu turned out to be a hard nut to bite for Chiranjeevi. Mohan Babu's fans too have threatened of similar reactions if unnecessary acts of hostility continue.

Some of the fans who took part in the effigy-burning were arrested by cops and were later released.

What started out as a celebration for the entire Tollywood has resulted in an ugly clash of the titans. Until now, it was only a cold war. Now it has come to the open.

Chitchat with Sawariya couple (Ranbir Kapoor & Sonam Kapoor)

Ranbir Kapoor (son of Rishi Kapoor) and Sonam Kapoor (daughter of Anil Kapoor) are in town to promote their debut vehicle ‘Sawariya’ directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. International movie producer Sony-Columbia-Tristar is venturing in Indian films for the first time by co-producing it. Sawariya is slated for the worldwide release on 9 November. Here are the excepts from chitchat with them -

What are the advantages of having filmy background?
Sonam Kapoor: If I were not the daughter of Anil Kapoor, I would not have got this opportunity. It would have been very difficult.

Ranbir Kapoor: It is written for us. I would have been difficult if I were not from Kapoor family. But there are disadvantages too. The expectations are huge on us. The old adage - Rise is higher, fall is harder - applies to us.

Did you undergo any professional training?
Sonam Kapoor: I had been working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the past four years in the direction department. Working with SLB is like going to college and learning things.

Ranbir Kapoor: I did an acting course in a film school, New York. But what I learnt from Sanjay Leela Bhansali while working for him is much more valuable than I what I learnt at film school.

Why did you choose Sanjay Leela Bhansali for your first film?
Sonam Kapoor: I did not choose him. He chose me. He is my favorite director and the best filmmaker in the entire India. I never expected him to pick me up as heroine for this film.

Is acting there in your genes?
Sonam Kapoor: I could say that Ranbir inherited lot of acting from his parents Rishi and Neetu.
Ranbir Kapoor: Sonam inherited dedication and passion for cinema from her father Anil Kapoor.

Did you get any privileged treatment because of your filmy background?
Sonam Kapoor: People in the sets are nonchalant about our filmy background. And we never expected any special privileges.

Shall Anil Kapoor stop romancing on screen because you became a heroine?
Sonam Kapoor: No. Both of us are individuals and are free to choose the right characters for us.

How did you manage to shed your weight?
Sonam Kapoor: I could not believe it when Sanjay Leela Bhansali asked me to act in this film. I took the assistance of two experts from Hyderabad - Shervir and his wife. They made me lose all my weight.

Did you enjoy dances in this film?
Ranbir Kapoor: I struggled with my dances. But it was Sanjay Leela Bhansali who made my dances appear good on screen.

What is the story of Sawariya?
Sonam Kapoor: Sawariya is a simple and beautiful love story. It is about two souls consumed by love.

Were you nervous while doing this film?
Sonam Kapoor: when I asked the same question to Rishi Kapoor about Bobby, he said that he was not nervous. But very anxious and excited. The same applies to me.

Ranbir Kapoor: Yes, I was nervous.

You look good onscreen together? What is the secret?
Sonam Kapoor: We are good friends even before we signed up for this film. When you are good friends it shows on screen.

What kind of roles will you be doing in future? Are you up for exposing?
Sonam Kapoor: My family left the decision of choosing roles to me. I never stoop to the level of vulgarity. My parents trust me and they feel that I have good judgment. I would like to do both different films and typical glamorous roles.

Will you act in Telugu?
Sonam Kapoor: Yes. I am open for it. My father started his career in south films. I have high regard for the south films and south Indian directors.

Tell us about your aunt Sridevi Kapoor?
She is a legend. She is like my second mom. She did films like Sadma and Chal Baaz at the same time. That shows the kind of variety she offers. She balanced her career with commercial and critically acclaimed films. She is my god!
